October is a month of transition in Colorado. Warm, sunny afternoons can quickly give way to chilly nights, and the first hard freeze—and even the first snow—may be just around the corner. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the last days of fall while getting your home and garden ready for the colder months ahead. A little preparation now can help protect your plants, prevent winter home-maintenance problems, and make the change of seasons a whole lot easier.
1. Give the Lawn One Last Drink
Colorado's dry fall weather can leave lawns, trees, and shrubs thirsty going into winter. Continue watering during dry stretches until the ground freezes, especially newer trees and shrubs.
2. Don't Automatically Rake Every Leaf
Leaves can be mulched into the lawn with the mower, and some can stay in garden beds as winter protection and habitat for beneficial insects. Thick mats on turf, though, should go.
3. Disconnect Those Hoses
Before the first serious freeze, disconnect garden hoses, drain outdoor faucets, and winterize irrigation systems. A forgotten hose can contribute to a frozen or damaged pipe.
4. Clean the Gutters
Once most leaves have fallen, clear gutters and downspouts so melting snow has somewhere to go rather than creating ice and drainage problems.
5. Seal the Drafts Before the Heating Bills Arrive
Check weatherstripping around doors and windows, and look for obvious gaps where cold air can enter.
